Juneteenth: Honoring Freedom, Reflecting on Progress

Everything You Should Know About Juneteenth— Why It Still Matters Today and How You Can Meaningfully Observe It.

The legacy of Juneteenth

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, it marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom— over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. For the 250,000 enslaved people still in Texas, it was a delayed but historic liberation. Juneteenth has since become a celebration of freedom, resilience, and Black culture.

Why Juneteenth Was Long Overlooked

For many years, Juneteenth remained underrecognized outside of Black communities— especially in the South. It wasn’t until 1980 that Texas made it a state holiday, and not until 2021 that it became a federal holiday in the U.S.

Only recently has Juneteenth gained broader national attention, serving as a critical opportunity for reflection on the country’s unfinished work around racial equity.

How Juneteenth is Celebrated

From coast to coast, Juneteenth is m. arked by:

  • Parades and Festivals featuring Black artists, food and culture
  • Family Cookouts with traditional dishes like barbecue and red drinks
  • Public Education through panels, museum events, and history walks
  • Community Action, including service, activism, and supporting Black-owned businesses

Why Juneteenth Still Matters in 2025

Juneteenth isn’t just about looking back— it’s about checking in. In a time when racial disparities still exist in healthcare, housing, education, and more, the holiday reminds us that true freedom is a continuous pursuit.

It’s a day to ask: What does freedom mean now? How can we do better today than we did yesterday?

Juneteenth is a day of freedom— but also of truth, healing and collective action. Whether you’re celebrating, learning, or contributing to your community, make this June 19 a meaningful one.
