How the 76-team format works
The 2027 tournament is the first with 76 teams. The 24 teams at the bottom of the field, the 12 lowest-seeded conference champions and the 12 lowest-seeded at-large teams, play 12 Opening Round games. The 12 winners join 52 teams in a 64-team bracket of four regions, and from there it runs as it always has: six rounds to the national champion. The printed bracket puts the Opening Round in a strip along the bottom; write each winner on the first-round line the bracket gives it.
