Why are calendar events showing twice?

Find out whether duplicate events come from two calendars, an imported file, or repeated events in one feed. Hide the extra calendar before removing anything.

If the same event appears twice, first check which calendar each copy belongs to. Hiding one calendar temporarily is a safer way to identify the extra copy than deleting events immediately.

Possible causes include adding the same schedule through two methods, viewing it through two accounts, or importing a file as well as subscribing to a live feed. Two different calendars can also legitimately contain the same event.

1. Identify the two copies

Open each copy of an affected event and note its calendar name, account, date, and time. A matching title alone does not prove duplication: separate sessions or a rescheduled event may have similar names.

  • Google Calendar: look at the calendar shown in the event details, then find it in the calendar list.
  • Apple Calendar: check the Calendar field in the event details. In the Calendars list, also check the account or group containing it.
  • Outlook: check the event's calendar and compare it with the calendars selected in the sidebar.

2. Hide one calendar and check the result

Turn off one calendar's visibility, then look at the same date again. In Google Calendar or Outlook, use the calendar list. On iPhone or iPad, open Calendar > Calendars and deselect the calendar. Hiding changes what you see; it does not cancel a subscription or erase events.

If only one copy remains, you have identified overlapping calendars. Decide which one to keep by checking its source and whether its upcoming events are current.

3. Remove the extra connection, not both

If you added the same schedule through a Sync2Cal account connection and an ICS link, keep the method you intend to use and remove only the redundant calendar from the destination app. You do not need both methods for the same schedule in the same account.

Do not choose Remove in Sync2Cal's My Calendars if you want to keep that Sync2Cal subscription active. That action stops the subscription and can remove its connected Google or Outlook calendar. Use the removal guide to distinguish removing an extra app calendar from stopping the subscription.

If two accounts show the same schedule in one app, you can simply keep one calendar hidden. You do not need to remove either account from your phone.

If both copies are in the same calendar

Check whether you imported a downloaded ICS file more than once, or imported events that already existed. A one-time import is separate from a live subscription. See importing versus subscribing.

For imported events mixed with personal appointments, delete only the copies you can positively identify. Do not delete the entire personal calendar. Keep a backup before any bulk cleanup, and ask your calendar provider for help if the imported items cannot be distinguished reliably.

For duplicates inside a single Sync2Cal-managed calendar, check the corresponding event list on Sync2Cal. If it is duplicated there too, report the calendar page and both event dates. If Sync2Cal shows it once but your managed calendar shows it twice, contact us before repeatedly removing and re-adding it.

Check that the fix worked

Show the calendar you kept and inspect an affected date plus a future event. You should see the expected event once. If duplicates return, recheck the calendar names: a remaining subscription or another visible account may still be supplying a second copy.

For help, email hello@sync2cal.com with the Sync2Cal calendar page, an example event, your calendar app, and the names of the calendars containing the copies. A screenshot of the two event details can help; hide unrelated personal information.

Provider guidance: duplicate events in Apple Calendar and managing multiple Outlook calendars.

If both copies remain inside a single managed calendar, report the duplicate events with the calendar page and affected dates.

Frequently asked questions

Will hiding a calendar delete its events?

No. Hiding changes visibility. The calendar and its subscription remain until you separately remove them.

Should I disconnect my whole Google or Microsoft account to remove duplicates?

No. First identify the extra calendar or imported copy. Disconnecting an integration affects other Sync2Cal calendars using that connection and is not the first step for duplicate events.

Why do duplicates remain after I unsubscribe?

An imported copy or a second subscription may still exist. Inspect the calendar and account attached to the remaining events before deleting anything else.
